I believe that before Jesse came to Calamus he was a soul with out a cause. He did not even try to complete his vision quest. So that makes me think that he does not take his life so seriously, and I also believe that his priority are messed up. But I can see a difference between what people say about his past, and how he acts now. I think he is starting to care more, because he sees Wade as a good influence.

RR-01 Jesse's Past
I believe that before Jesse came to Calamus he was a soul with out a cause. He did not even try to complete his vision quest.
